Junk removal in Kingman, Arizona

The weekly stuff is already covered here, since the city's Solid Waste Department picks up trash twice a week for city residents. So the calls he gets in Kingman are the heavy leftovers that pickup leaves behind: the sectional in the front room, the chest freezer that quit out in the carport, carried out from where they sit.

The same department also runs the city's extra trash program. The jobs that come to Brandon are the ones somebody has to lift: a washer already pulled off its hookups, a mattress nobody can bend around a doorway. The other reason people call is the trip out to the landfill. Brandon loads the pile and makes that drive himself, so nobody has to borrow a truck for an afternoon.

Brandon works out of his Golden Valley service area and covers Mohave County, so Kingman is regular ground for him. A Walleck Ranch garage is the easy version: the door rolls up and the load is already in reach. A dresser in a back bedroom is the other kind, down a hall and out the front door, and that's the work he's there for. On a Hualapai Foothills driveway he parks the pickup truck with a trailer where it fits and walks the load down to it.

Not everything that goes on the trailer is trash. Usable furniture goes to a donation center first, metal and cardboard are recycled where they can be, and what's actually trash goes to the landfill. Paint, pool chemicals and fuel cans never ride along, and neither do propane tanks or a car battery left in the corner of the garage. Anything the transfer station won't take, Brandon will check on before he commits to the load, so a question about one item is worth asking before he gets there.

How extra trash works

• The Solid Waste Department comes to your home and picks up items that will not fit in your container, such as tree limbs, furniture, yard waste and some construction materials.
• Put the items at the edge of your street or in your alley.
• The same restrictions that apply to your regular trash also apply to extra trash.
• The city will not pick up refrigerators or air conditioning units if the compressors are still in them.
• The city lists items it will not pick up and that should not go in your container, among them construction waste, rocks, dirt or concrete, tires, large dead animals, hot ashes and hazardous materials.
• Have your container at the curb by 6 a.m. on your pickup day, and curbside means at the edge of the street, not on the sidewalk.
• Bag and tie all trash before it goes in the container.
