The pile on an appliance call

An appliance call is a short list of heavy things. A refrigerator or a chest freezer out of the garage. A washer and dryer that came as a pair and are leaving as one, or a dishwasher pulled from under the counter. An electric range, or a water heater the plumber left in the side yard.

Most of these calls come right after a delivery, when the store sets the new unit in place and hauls nothing away. Landlords call between tenants, usually about a range and a fridge. Most of what Brandon hauls is bulky and light. An appliance is small and dense, which changes the carry and the loading. The minimum is $250, and a single piece starts there. Brandon prices from the photo, so the figure comes back in the text. The quote itself costs nothing, so there's no reason to guess at it. A photo of the appliance standing where it is now tells him the most, since he can see the unit and the door it has to come through. How Brandon gets it out of the house

Brandon does the hauling himself, so he works the carry out in his head before he gets there. The photo tells him which room the unit is in, how much door frame he has to clear and whether the way out runs down a step or a full flight of stairs. He carries it from where it sits, so the washer can stay in the laundry room until he's standing in it. Anything still hooked to gas, water or power has to be off the line before he loads it. On a rental or a commercial space he sorts the timing out with the manager, including how he gets in and which units in the place are staying put. He'd rather hear about the stairs in the first text than find them at the door.

Where the old units end up

A unit that still works goes to a donation center first. If the washer runs and it's only leaving because the laundry room is being redone, Brandon would rather pass it on than bury it. What's past using gets recycled where it can be, and an appliance gives up a lot that way, since most of the weight he's carrying is metal. What's left is real trash and goes to the landfill. A fridge that comes out dented and dead doesn't go the same way as one that just got replaced. Loose metal that isn't an appliance, a bed frame or a roll of old fencing, can ride on the same trip as scrap metal removal.

What Brandon will not load on this job

An appliance still hooked to gas, water or power stays put until it's disconnected. Propane tanks and any pressurized cylinder are out, patio and camping cylinders included. Car batteries stay, along with anything still holding liquid. Paint, solvents, thinners and household chemicals don't go on the truck, and neither do motor oil, antifreeze or fuel cans. Pool and spa chemicals are household hazardous waste, so they stay too. Suspected asbestos goes to a licensed abatement contractor, not onto the truck.
