What usually ends up in a furniture pile

Most furniture calls are the same handful of pieces. A sofa or a sectional. Recliners. Bed frames and box springs. Dressers, armoires, bookcases that were built in the room they're standing in. Dining sets with a table nobody can lift alone. Patio furniture that has been sitting in the sun since the last owner.

Where a couch goes after it leaves the house

Brandon looks at a piece before he decides where it lands. A couch with clean cushions goes to a donation center. So does a dresser that still has all its drawers, because somebody furnishing a first apartment will take it. Metal bed frames, bunk rails and office chair bases get recycled where they can be.

What's left is real trash, and real trash goes to the landfill. Broken-back recliners and water-stained particle board sit in that group, since nobody is going to put them in a living room again. Brandon does the sorting.

How Brandon gets it out the door

He walks the path first, looking at where the piece sits and which corner it has to swing around on the way out. Doors come off hinges when they have to. Sofa legs come off when a stairwell is tight. On a second floor he takes the long pieces down on edge, one end at a time, instead of trying to wrestle a full sectional around a landing.

Loading order matters on a pickup truck with a trailer: the big flat pieces go in first, and the chairs and small stuff fill the gaps. What stays behind on a furniture job

A furniture pile usually comes with company, and some of it stays. Paint, solvents, thinners and household chemicals off the garage shelf are out. So are propane tanks and any pressurized cylinder, patio and camping cylinders included, which rules out the tank under a fire table. Motor oil, antifreeze and fuel cans stay. Car batteries stay, and so does anything still holding liquid, a water bed included.

Pool and spa chemicals stacked behind the patio set are household hazardous waste. A washer or a fridge pushed out with the dining set has to be disconnected from gas, water or power first. Asbestos, or anything that may contain it, needs a licensed abatement contractor, so a built-in that may be wrapped in it stays put.
