What a mattress job actually is

A mattress job is short and awkward. What rides out is usually the mattress, the box spring under it, and the frame that held both: side rails, slats, a headboard, sometimes a footboard still bolted to it. Toppers, pads and old pillows go along. A bunk bed comes out as two mattresses, a ladder and a stack of boards. The mattress folded inside a sleeper sofa counts once it's pulled out. The people who call are landlords and property managers clearing a unit between tenants, and families turning a spare room back into a spare room after a new bed arrives. How Brandon gets it out of the room

The mattress can stay where it is until he gets there. Brandon carries the mattress out from where it sits, including a second-floor bedroom with a turn at the landing. He stands a mattress on edge to get it through a doorway, and he'll pull the frame apart when the hall is tighter than the rails are long. It leaves on a pickup truck with a trailer. At an apartment or a rental, he works off what the manager tells him: which unit it is and where the truck can sit while he loads. A manager can send the photo and the unit number, and Brandon works from what the manager tells him about getting into the unit. Brandon handles the carry, so nobody on site has to lift a mattress down a stairwell.

What stays behind on a mattress call

What's stacked next to the bed sometimes isn't Brandon's to haul. The paint cans and thinner in the closet stay. So do propane and camping cylinders stacked in the corner of a spare room, and motor oil, antifreeze or a fuel can left in the garage end of the hall. A car battery stays, and so does any container with liquid still in it. Chemicals from a pool or spa count as household hazardous waste, so they travel a different route. If something might contain asbestos, that's a job for a licensed abatement contractor, not for Brandon. If the transfer station turns an item away, Brandon has to as well, so point out whatever you're unsure about and he'll check on it.

Mattress runs across Mohave County

Mohave County is spread out, and a mattress in Dolan Springs sits a long way from one in Bullhead City. Brandon drives to both. He pulls a bed out of a house in Kingman, Fort Mohave, Mohave Valley, Lake Havasu City or Laughlin in Nevada, and the smaller spots count too: Valle Vista, Chloride, Oatman, Yucca and White Hills.
